The habitat water!
The pond is a fascinating place! Here, newts, frogs, and many insects live. The aquatic plants provide shelter and food. In summer, you can observe the croaking frogs and the shimmering dragonflies. Did you know that ponds are also important for the climate?
Dragonflies
Dragonflies are fascinating, beautiful large insects and real acrobats of flight. At the pond, these lovely predators are welcome guests as they eat various pests. Mosquitoes are among their favorite foods. Although dragonflies sometimes carry fearsome names like “devil’s needle” or “eye-driller,” these names are completely unsuitable for these shy insects, which are in no way dangerous to humans. If you want to attract these flying acrobats to your garden pond, you should focus on lush planting along the shore with flowering plants and ensure the water remains clean. The larvae of dragonflies overwinter in the garden pond.
Newts
Like frogs and toads, newts are amphibians, but they are not frog amphibians, rather tail amphibians. They eat many harmful insects and are therefore beneficial guests. These animals are quite shy. Newts love natural ponds and quickly settle in newly created ponds. Newts need plenty of opportunities to hide, so be sure to provide many aquatic plants, such as water lilies. This allows the newts to protect themselves from predators. Newts lay their eggs in shallow water.
